Test Logo

For this Logo we took a lot of inspiration from the original oasis logo which was a lot of help because it helped us imagine how they would like to portray their band. To make this logo i simply had to create 3 layers. One layer was a white square along the bottom and then the other layer was the black square and then obviously the text in the middle. To make the top half of the text white i needed to select the option  on the text layer saying "Alpa to selection". This meant that there would be a selection around the whole of the text. I then selected the layer with the black box and this cut the selection to the top half of the text. After this i selected the fill bucket and filled the top half of the text with the white colour and i got this outcome.

Costume change

We decided to change the costume of the character in mid filming. This meant that we had to re-shoot a lot of the footage that we had. Instead of using jeans and an Adidas top, we used jeans and i beige coat that represented the band and decade that the band made the song very well. We thought that this was a great decision and represented the band a lot more. The baige jacket had an excellent representation of what the band wore and how they acted. This with the baggy jeans and the adidas shoes gave an excellent view to the audience of where the band were from and how they were.

Digipack analysis

Digipaks come in a lot of shapes and sizes. These can range from the way that they open up to the user and the way that they look. This Oasis album cover has a very saturated picture for its background. This means that the colours are at a high intensity so that they are strong and brighter than they were when the picture was taken. The title of this simply goes through the middle of the cover with other information on it. This is mostly wood in this picture and they made sure that the title colours contrast to the background.

This Greenday cover is very dark around the edges and very light in the middle. This has a sort of spotlight effect on the drawings that are in the middle of the cover. This seems to be two people kissing, this could be a representation of the genre of the album or it could be representing a story from the band. They have the band name at the top and then the album name down the bottom which is a very different layout to the album cover above.

This album cover appears to be very peculiar and colourless scene. The singer of the album has some sort of telescope device that he is using to represent the title of the album, which is the 20/20 experience. The colours that are on it are not very ranged because it has been put in black and white, but the contrast of it appears to be fairly high so that the details can be picked out of the singer and of the device. On the other hand the title is on the bottom part of the screen and is in colour to contrast to the background. This makes it stand out and is fairly eye catching.

This album cover has a picture of the sea because of the album name. It is very block colours and has quite a cartoon effect when viewed. The title appear to be put in the top left of the cover which is very different to the other albums that we have looked at. The picture of the sea is very layered and has obviously been made using a computer application.

This muse album also has its title in the top hand left of the screen. This is much like the before one and I think the reason for this is so that the audience can see as much of the album picture as possible and still be able to easily read and see the name. The picture on this cover is also very highly saturated and has quite a bright and vibrant effect. This seems to be a medium long shot of 4 men sat around a table doing something that is unknown to the audience. With blue, browns and reds it makes it quite a stand out photo to others. They have put the black title in the sky as this was the brightest part of the picture and they obviously needed as much contrast as possible.

Film Sets

We decided to take pictures of our shots to show the actual location of where we were filming. The first one is in a bedroom which has the shots of Henry waking up. This room is very well lit and we thought that it would be a prime place and scene to film our first planned shots. This was a very simple suburban room and was nothing special. We thought that this would suit the theme and genre of the song very well and there was just about room to shoot all of the shots that we wanted.
The next room was the bathroom where we thought it would be good if we showed the rooms that the character got ready in before he went off on the venture. We only did one shot in this room in the end but it worked very well as part of the performance.

Costume

Song adjustments

In the song wonderwall we have decided that the song is too long for us to make our music video around. I did not really want to choose another song because we were quite comfortable with the lyrics and beats from this one. We decided to work around this issue and think of other properties for the song. We decided to do this buy speeding up the song but still keeping the quality of the voices and the instruments. This isn't very hard to do because of the software that i am using. All we changed was the time scale on the editing software (Sony Vegas) this meant that the voices didn't turned high pitch and nor did the beats. This was very important for us because it meant that we could still keep the quality of the song.

The other change that we made to make the song shorter was by cutting out a verse. I simply split the music track where the verse that i wanted to cut out was. This meant that i was able then to delete this verse and put the song back together. Obviously, after this the music video sounded a bit weird because of the cut. To fix this issue all i had to do was then blend the two tracks together. This proved to be successful for the song.

What Costume is best suited for this video (audience research)

We needed to decide what costume we were going to use for our music and whether or not we should use one costume or multiple ones for the video. Our results came back quite one sided. After asking our classmates we saw that the idea of casual clothing was quite a dominant choice over the others. Even though this was quite one sided me and Henry still decided to use two costumes for the whole video. Otherwise the view of the character would be quite boring and there would be a lack of range in the video. By a suit we would be wearing a tie, shirt blazer etc. For casual it would be clothes that are more related to the band who sings the song. And for baggy and ripped it would be quite dark clothes that are in quite bad condition. Overall though me and my partner decided to use the suit and the casual approach to the video. The suit would be used for the flashbacks so that the black and white would work even more effectively. The casual clothing would be used for the shots where our character is singing and progressing his journey.

Oasis Wonderwall - Video Analysis

There is no specific story to this music video, only a few objects and people that symbolise the chorus and name of the song. They use kind of circus people and objects to represent the wonderwall that they are singing about. Overall i think that this video might have been relating to the band on a personal level rather then the audience.

The lighting of this video is all in black and white so it is hard to distinguish specific types of key and back lighting that would aid this video. The lighting did help the audience to view the different scenes that were taking place in this video. The camera shots tended to be a lot of close-ups and medium long shots. This was because the band wanted the audience to focus on specific objects and people.

The performance was mostly of Noel Gallagher and the band playing. A lot of the shots were of Noel singing and then there were other cut offs to random shots that involved some form of band member playing their instrument or of something circus related. There are not a lot of shots that present much of a performance for this video. These shots represent people being his wonderwall.

The costume of these band members is quite casual and the main singer almost looks like the portrayal of John Lennon.

Costume and prop planning

For the costumes we were thinking to dress the character in a skinny suit to represent the rock/Indie that this song was representing. We wanted to stay as far away to the original song video as possible so that we could develop our own ideas and make it adjusted to us. This pos-

sibility for the suit is quite high because of the contrast that the character will have with other places around him. For example, we are setting part of our shot in the countryside, which means that a lot of the surroundings will be green. Therefor the character will be wearing black and white and the contrast for the shot will be great and it will mean that we will not have to colour correct the clip that much.

Another potential idea for the costume would just be baggy clothes that would suit an everyday man. The reason for this is because that it would have a person connection with the audience if the character was wearing everyday clothes and it could put the viewers in the shoes of the character. Although that this might be quite a good effect to portray it means that the costume would be quite boring and would not really stand out of the ordinary which is not the effect that we want. This costume could also keep things down to reality and make the whole video more believable. The reason we would want to do this is because we are making this music video quite abstract.

For a prop I think that it would be suitable to use some sort of instrument. The most likely one that we are going to use is a guitar (acoustic). This is so that we can have to character doing a bit more than just walking around and it will give us a more range of shots that we can add and use. This will also give out character something to do with his hands. The guitar will not be with him in every scene because there are other ideas that I have for him; it’s just something for the musical side of it instead of just the story.

I also think that we should have some sort of symbol in this music video to represent something in specific. I think that this symbol will be a snow globe of a city or place and the character is travelling to get there. I think that this would be a great symbol and it will be a good object for the camera to cut away to now and again as a reminder for the character and for the audience. The reason I want to add this into my piece is because I think that it is important for the character to be trying to get somewhere and he needs some sort of motive in order to progress this journey. It also gives us a lot of different things to film.

Location planning

As we have chosen our song to be wonderwall by oasis, there are a vast amount of locations that we could use to film this. My first idea was to film this out side on hilltops because of the cliffs and deep scenery that would surround the characters. In the lyrics of wonderwall there is a part that says “maybe, you’re gonna be the one that saves me”. This made me think that the main character of the video would be falling off a cliff and gets saved by some form of miracle or person as a moral. I thought that this would be a good idea because of the bright skies and the contrasts that would be created with the characters and the fields. A disadvantage that I saw with a location like this would be the silhouette of the characters if they were against the sun on the fields. I thought that this might be a good chance to take advantage of this effect but I think that it would get boring after a while for the audience.

I tried to take a lot of the lyrics into consideration of where I was going to film this video. Another set of lyrics that I found were “and all the roads we had to walk are winding, and all the lights that light the way are blinding”. The first thing that popped into my head for these lyrics is a city scene that would be hosted by the night with bright streetlights. These lights could have great effects on my character because they could silhouette them again. And it would also light the near by scenery very well with its orange glow. This would present some ideal effects for characters and camera. Also if I could get an establishing shot of this city then I would be able to create some great effects in the editing process on the clip. This could include streaming lights through all the roads at night to show time speeding through.

One other idea that I had for a location would be to host the video in an English home. The reason I thought this was because that this video could be about a relationship that is recovering from some rough patches. If this was the case then I think that the video would start with a lot of arguing at the beginning and then slowly get better through out. Most of these scenes would suit the location of a home best because it brings the audience closer to the characters because of the small spaces. Also if we were to film in a small living room then we would have limited space to move which would mean that most of the shots were medium long shots, medium shots or close ups. This would present some quite limited shots that I would be able to use for the video, but on the other hand it would bring the camera closer to the relevant characters and objects that are in the music video.

Survey - who watches music videos?

For my survey I asked a range of people of different ages if they watched music videos. The Results that I gained were very interesting but not very surprising and it really helped me suit my music videos preferences to a specific age so that I would get the most popular result.

As you can see the results were not surprising, but this still did help massively on whom my music video should appeal to. It also helps me on to what type of content I should put into my music video in order for it to appeal to people between the ages of 15 and 25. I got these results from asking people in my class, a range of teachers and older neighbours that live around my street. This mean that I had a range of ages and my survey would become more useful and accurate.

Performance planning

For our performance in the music video we are going to use Henry as our singer and actor in the performance. This is quite an easy character to use because he is my partner during the process of this projects there for her will be available to me at all times. We would be filming with henry in multiple different locations for a lot of different scenes. These locations would be near enough in the same location, which means that we will not have to be doing too much travelling to each location. The times that we will be filming vary and I can access Henry at any time, which is useful because it means that we will be able to take some spontaneous filming if we need to. Henry will be in a range of shots including in the locations including in the place of, English countryside, a city and a typical suburban home, which can host a lot of the happenings. We will only be using Henry as a character for the music video because we only need him as a vocalist and actor for the whole shoot. This gives us time to focus on a lot more important aspects of the music video. The times that we will be filming with Henry are most likely to be between the dates of 20/09/13 – 27/09/13. This will give us a week with Henry and we will be able to take all the necessary shots in order to come out with a successful product. We are representing henry as a man with a lot of issues. He is a working class man that has recently split up with a woman of his dreams and it is his plan to go back to the place where they met and find this woman. He is shown to have some form of drinking problem in this video and this show through flash backs and many other shots of his disturbed mood. He will be dressed in quite casual urban clothing. This is helping to representing the band and the kind of person that he actually is.

Analysis of music video (Eminem - Lose Yourself)

The story of this video is from the film that Eminem made called 8 mile. It is the story of how he became famous as a singer and all of the clips throughout this music video are from the film and all the lyrics are directly related to these specific points in his life. It is excellent the way that they have done this because it gives Eminem representation for his film by having the song in it, and also when creating the music video it gives him publicity for his film. This means that he is helping out both media products that he has produced create more money.

The lighting of this video is quite dark most of the time because of the films being set in the darkness because of rap battles etc. This means that you could still see everything that was going on in the film but also there was a slightly more depressing look upon the whole situation that he goes through. The camera work in this music video is mostly from a film, so the types of shots vary. However when the camera is just on Eminem singing alone, It is a medium long shot showing quite a lot of his body in the frame. At the beginning of this music video though there are a lot of establishing shots of a city so that the audience knows where it was hosted.

The performance is yet again mostly from the film so the acting is quite serious and stays in the theme of the lyrics. This is important to have this kind of film and music video link sometimes because films are more likely to explain the song’s lyrics in a way a music video couldn’t. Eminem does fantastic in his film because he is basically re-acting his life which means that he can use his part really personally. The other performance that takes place is just Eminem singing the words to his song with the sign “8-mile” in the background to represent the film if the audience are unsure.

The costume that Eminem where’s tends to be quite baggy and “street” wear. This is because of the type of person that he is represented as when he was younger. It is stereotyping rappers and people from that area a little bit but it is also a true stereotype. This does help the audience to visualise what kind of person he is and the kind of place that he is living in. The props that he has most of the time are something to do with music. So he either has headphones on or he is singing into a microphone. This shows his overall passion for what he does and shows how much he will do it in order to become successful. This video is very inspiring for the audience.

The location is a rural and rough place in a city in America. All of this video is hosted there because of the significance it has to the film and his life. The representation of rappers in this film is very specific and true. It represents them as people who battle with their voices, it shows their style, the way the act and the way they talk which is very important. The reason this representation is so close to the real people is because these events are a true story.

Analyisis of music video (Coldplay - Paradise)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1G4isv_Fylg

The music video for this dong is very strange and is used for comedic purposes. They are using a person dressed up as an animal that escapes from the zoo and goes off into the wild. The story to this song is still significant but there are a lot of things that are happen and the whole video revolves around the progression of this animal getting to paradise. It is a very interesting video and a lot of it has a lower effect on it so that the pace isn't too fast and so that the audience can keep up with it.

The lighting of this music video is very bright because of the sunshine that beams onto most of the shots. It helps the audience visualize paradise and gives them a clearer look on all the scenes that are taking place. The camera work in this video is very standard and a lot of the shots vary on what the character of this video doing. The shots are sometimes slowed down and it is all focusing on what the characters next stage of escape is. A lot of the shots are eye line matches. This means that whatever the character is looking at, the camera will then cut away to the object or place that their eyes are focusing on.

The performance of this video is quite unique because the main singer is dressed up as an elephant and he is escaping from the zoo to join the rest of his friends in “paradise”. There is some hints of them all performing as a group but they are all dressed as elephants and they are either in a field or on a massive stage. They only perform towards the end of the video and it is all still with their costumes on so you can kind of tell who is who because of the instruments they are holding but it does require some thinking for the audience.

The costumes are peculiar in this because of the elephant costumes but that is about all that stand out from this video costume wise. On the way through this video there are no significant props that aid the character or video apart from the unicycle that he uses to travel to his destination and the instruments.

The location of this starts off in a public zoo and he slowly progresses through streets and an airport and then finally onto the road and final location. There is also the location of the stage at the end where they are all performing. There is a really good range of places where they filmed this video and it definitely keeps the audience interested and eyes fixed to see where the character ends up next. This is one of the reasons why it is really important to have a story in your music video, so that it gives the audience more of a reason to watch and listen to it.

There are not really any specific representations here apart from maybe animals wanting to be free. Other that there are no specific or key people that we can look at because of the whole abstract approach that they took to making this video. One part of this music video that I likes was the chorus kicked in towards the end, this was when the character was re-joined with his group and started dancing etc.

Analyisis of music video (Jack Bugg - Lighting Bolt)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fY0oPg1h8fQ

There is no significant story to this music video; it is just different shots of a city and the performer. I don’t know if there is any relation between the shots of this music video and the lyrics of the song, but if there are they are not that noticeable to an audience. The shots that are in the music video consist of lots of different landmarks filled with people. Nothing to exiting for the audience and it is just a simple and low budgeted music video which would be perfect for us.

The lighting of this film is yet again quite natural, but in some of the shots they use the black and white effect and also make the shot look like it was taken from an old camera. I think that they did this to tie in with the genre of the music. It is a very good idea and really does complete the effect on such low budgeted makings. The camera tends to have quite a shake to it no matter where it is being filmed it is always on the move. A lot of the shots that are taken for this video are establishing shots to show the audience where it is being filmed. Also when the camera is focused on Jake it tends to be quite medium shot so that the audience can get a good look at him and also view where he is.

Most of this video is the artist performing in different locations and scenes. They did not really have the idea for a story to go with this song because the lyrics are not really relatable to any kind of plot that could be created. The location of this film is in a specific city and there are some shots of signs that can give away where it is being filmed. Most of the shots are showing a lot of different places in this city, some have the performer in and some don’t. Either way there is nothing that doesn't have a city shot in or something from that specific location.

The costume of Jake in this is simply his day to day clothes by the looks of things. He probable wanted to do this because he is very young and he didn't really want to symbolise anything but himself on the screen. I think that this is very good because it really does shoe how young the performer is and it is quite inspiring. The main prop on this video is his guitar that he uses. He plays this instrument himself whilst he sings and I think that he wanted to publicise this because it is quite a talent. Apart from this there is not really any other significant props of costume that contributes towards the success of this music video.

The location of this film doesn't seem to be relevant to the song in anyway but it still provides an interesting view for the audience. The video is set in a crowded city which has some known landmarks. There are clues throughout the video that hint about what city it is. All of the camera work is focused on this city and is portrayed in different camera styles and effects which make it a bit more interesting to look at.

The representation of Jake's age is very important in this music video because it shows that he is very young but the fact that he can do what he wants and make a career out of this is very important for the audience to know because it is a very inspiring representation.
