Analysis of music video (Smash Mouth - All Star)

Smash mouth - All Star - http://www.vevo.com/watch/smash-mouth/all-star/USIV20110065?source=instantsearch

The target audience for this specific music is for the younger ages (for example, teenagers and young adults (13 - 18). This is quite a wide range of ages and people that fit into this specific dermographic.

This music does relate back to the song quite a bit, but it also has its own little side story running off it as well. One place where it relates to the story is the scene where the singer runs into the burning building and saves the dog. The reason this relates back to the song is because in the lyrics they are talking about being an "All Star". This obviously means someone who  stands out and almost a hero in some cases. At the beginning of the whole music video there is a short scene that begins with a few characters that are shown in the film mystery men.

This music video starts with the scene from a film (mystery men) to begin the story of the song. This scene does not go on for very long but it is quite an interesting story to watch before the song actually begins. The story involves four people interviewing other people that are dressed up in superhero costumes. I thought that this was quite a good idea because it gave the video a bit of story line before it went into the song, which is always a lot more interesting for the viewer because it gives them more to look at other than people playing instruments and singing. The use of synergy in the film and music video. The use of film in the music video can edge people to go and watch this film. And the same can happen when people watch the film and hear the song from it. It can make them think about buying the single if they like it.

The location of this music video is an interpreted typical surburban street that the main singer is walking through doing different things as he goes along. This location is also taken from the film of quite a fantasy street that these hero's live in. This street is taken from the film like a lot of other aspects in the music video. This relates back to the synergetic relationship that is being provided.

The camera angles and shots of this music video tend to be quite medium shots and establishing shots to show the audience where the video is set and the characters that are taking part in the whole music video. These shots are all moving shots and there is rarely a still shot that takes place in this video because of the fairly fast paced music and them that it is based around. At the beginning of the video there is a small cut scene that is from a film. This part of the video uses quite low angled shots and looks up at the characters themselves whilst they are trying to impress the judges with their talents.
